Event Tips: Tips for having a successful Garage Sale.
Preparation-
- Check local ordinances for information regarding permits and sign restrictions.
- Advertise your sale on Garage Sale Daily.com to increase your exposure.
- Consider having a multi-family sale.
- Have money available for making change. Try starting with $35.00 in assorted bills and change.
- Make change accessible. Try using a fanny pack.
- Have a check out table set up for purchases.
- Place an " All Sales Final " sign near the checkout table.
- Place signs at the major intersections near you, with a large arrow indicating the direction to the sale.
- Use cardboard or other sturdy material when making your signs.
- Mark ALL sale items with a price.
- Have an extention cord handy, as the buyer may want to check to see that the electronics work.
- Do not sell broken items, unless they can be repaired.
- Price items to sell.
- Place clothes (especially children's) in order by size.
- Place all items neatly on tables.
- Remove dust and dirt from sale items.
- Attach product manuals to sale items.
- Have plenty of newspaper and bags ready for purchases.
- Have a three-day sale. Begin your sale on Thursday and go through Saturday.
- Consider selling bottled water or cans of cold pop.
- Place balloons or flags in your yard to attract attention.
During the sale-
- Periodically re-arrange items for appearance.
- Have adequate help for peak times ( usually early mornings and afternoons ).
- Write " Sold " on any items someone is coming back for.
- Exchange telephone numbers with anyone coming back to pick up an item.
- Have a percentage of the item pre-paid if someone will be coming back to pick it up.
- Have receipts available for those who need one.
- Log all sales.
- Have a cordless or cell phone readily available.
- Do not let strangers into your house. Bring all sellable items outside.
After the sale-
- Remove all of the advertisement signs.
- Donate some of the unsold items to a homeless or women's shelter.
- Place some of the unsold items at resale shops.
- Thank your helpers. Buy lunch on the last day.
- Bring the unsold items to a second sale at a friend or family member's house.
